There’s a strange behavior going on in the Mears Park neighborhood. And it’s a secret. Specially-made art objects are being passed from person to person over and over again. You’re supposed to receive this gift, experience it, and give it away to the next person. What the gift is is a secret because it’s no fun to know what you’re getting before you get it. A community approach to public space recycling in Saint Paul.

Mears Park is a Saint Paul treasure. Co-designed by artist Brad Goldberg and landscape architect Don Ganje in the 1990s and it was honored by the America Society of Landscape Architects in its millennium program as a national landmark for outstanding landscape architecture. In Mears Park, converting plastic garbage bins to collect recycling would be, well…unworthy.
